Boston Celtics Practicing the Power of Now

Eckhart Tolle teaches us to be in the present, that is don't think about the future and don't think about the past because they do not exist, only the "now." This concept is confusing for many of us since we are taught to think about our future, have goals and work towards them.

However, the best examples of this concept comes from sports. The most current example is the amazing turnaround of the Boston Celtics.

At the beginning of the season, the Celtics acquired two NBA all-stars who've never been the NBA championship, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, to compliment the resident star of the team, Paul Pierce. The Celtics also acquired quality bench players to round up a very strong team on paper.

The team's main goal for this season is to win the NBA championship. However, their focus or attention has been with each game they played, never looking ahead to the next one until it was time. When questioned about upcoming opponents or current standing during press interviews, the standard comment has been to the effect of "we are only focused with this current game" or "we're not worried whether we will remain on top or not."

As a result, the Celtics have clinched the best NBA record this season, and third best in Boston Celtic history. Their defense has dominated the league and have an average winning margin of 10 points per game.

By being in the present with each game and not look ahead to the next one until it is time, the Celtics have achieved phenomenal success.

Contributor's Note

I've been reading Eckhart Tolle's book, 'A New Earth' and 'The Power of Now' and noticed the parallels between what he is saying and how the Celtic players are addressing their championship run in interviews with the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald.
