Japan's Convenience Store Sandwiches By James Chan My family and I travel to Japan every year to spend time with relatives and friends. Of course one of the highlights of going to Japan is the food. While my family looks forward to eating fresh sushi or other traditional Japanese fare, I get excited about eating the sandwiches found in the typical Japanese convenience stores. There’s nothing terribly unique about these sandwiches but they are so delicious. My favorite is the tuna and egg salad sandwich pack. It’s a sandwich sliced diagonally with one half tuna and the other half egg salad. That’s it. But the bread is usually soft and the mayonnaise that is used in Japan is not as tart as in the U.S. so the sandwiches flavor is mild. Coupled that with Japan’s famous canned iced coffee (for me, Georgia Café’ Au Lait) and I’m in heaven.

It's true, the sandwiches are good. So are the onigiri and the bentos and the noodles and all the other weird and wonderful concotions they have. You can live off a convenience store for months without getting bored.
